When was the last time you lost yourself and all sense of time doing something you enjoy? We hear this feeling described as a sense of flow, or a flow state. A flow state is a state of being where one becomes so immersed in what they are doing that they feel a sense of excitement, clarity, focus, and even ecstasy. Finding ourselves in this flow state allows us to be present and embodied in our physical experience, responsive to what is happening, and feel joyful.

My artwork explores how it looks and feels to create as I find myself in a state of flow. Using expansive organic shapes and bright loops of color, my tufted installations document the embodied flow state I feel when I create, immersing myself and the viewer in a playful world. I use yarn to create a sensory experience for the viewer, inviting the viewer’s body to connect with the physical quality of the artwork through touch, pulling them out of the distractions of reality, and into an embodied experience. The bright colors and tactile expansive shapes create a moment for the viewer to be fully present and enjoy, just as the flow state of creation does for me.

“Flow State” was my final thesis body of work for my Master of Fine Art in Painting at Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis, IN. The work was on display Spring 2026.
